BIODIESEL AVAILABLE IN OUR COMMUNITY AND BEYOND AT 92.4P A LITRE We are open for business. Working in conjunction with Sundance Renewables, Llangattock Biodiesel Club is promoting the use of biodiesel within our community of Llangattock and beyond. Biodiesel is now available in the community at just 92.4p a litre through Llangattock Biodiesel Club. The club is non-profit making, made up of community members who are dedicated to sourcing club member’s biodiesel that is of a high-quality, environmentally friendly and competitively priced for use in diesel cars. It’s simply a membership group of like minded people who are interested in cutting their polluting emissions by using biodiesel in their vehicles as well as saving a bit of money. We currently source our biodiesel from Sundance Renewables; a South Wales based outfit, who were the pioneers of biodiesel in Wales. They have many years’ production experience, and their fuel has achieved the European EN14124 quality standard for biodiesel. WHAT IS BIODIESEL? Llangattock Biodiesel Club sources biodiesel that is made from 100% recycled vegetable oil sourced from chip shops, restaurants and other food outlets. It is safe, non-toxic and biodegradable. It has similar characteristics to fossil-oil based diesel and can be used as a fuel for most (unmodified) diesel engines. Most importantly, biodiesel is much less polluting than normal petroleum diesel with 78% lower Carbon Dioxide emissions, 50% lower Carbon Monoxide emissions, 20% lower particulate emissions, 67% lower hydrocarbon emissions and 100% lower Sulphur Dioxide emissions. Biodiesel also has other benefits: there’s no fall-off in engine performance, it lubricates your engine better than normal diesel, which reduces wear on fuel injectors, and is also a better solvent than petroleum diesel, which helps to clean your engine of deposits left in the fuel pipes by normal, petroleum diesel. BIODIESEL IS BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT Biodiesel is classified as a "carbon neutral" fuel. This means that biodiesel use does not increase the net amount of carbon in the atmosphere. All carbon released when the fuel is burned has been recently absorbed by the plants providing the oil. There is some carbon input from agriculture - so net CO2 impact is 78-90% lower than fossil diesel. This differs from standard (fossil-oil based) diesel fuel which releases fossilised carbon into the atmosphere and contributes to global warming. One litre of fossil diesel causes 2.68kg CO2 emissions. Sourcing biodiesel from waste vegetable oil is sustainable and does not compete with land use for food production. Biodiesel contains zero sulphur (the main cause of acid rain). Biodiesel exhaust gasses contain far fewer carcinogens and dangerous particulates than standard diesel exhausts, making it better for public health. CAN BIODIESEL BE MIXED WITH STANDARD DIESEL? Biodiesel can be mixed in any proportion with standard diesel, even in the fuel tank. No modification is needed to the majority of vehicles. Most Llangattock Biodiesel Club members want to run their vehicles on straight biodiesel (B100), therefore maximising the fuel's environmental benefits and cost savings. WILL MY CAR RUN ON BIODIESEL? All unmodified diesel engines will run on biodiesel, but there are a few things to consider before filling your tank: If you have a new vehicle (built 2005 onwards), you should contact your manufacturer to see if it is warranted for B100 use. We want you to bombard them with your questions. The more they are pestered, the more they will authorise biodiesel use and make their cars more biodiesel friendly. Cars fitted with diesel particulate filters can have difficulties running on high percentages of biodiesel. Most vehicle manufactures will approve up to 5% blends (B5) with petroleum diesel. In older vehicles, fuel filters may require changing after the first 500 miles of use on biodiesel due to the cleaning action of B100. This is caused by the biodiesel removing deposits in your fuel tank and hoses left over from standard diesel usage. Your vehicle mechanic should be advised of this. Older vehicles may also have fuel hoses made of natural rubber, which is slowly degraded by biodiesel use. Hoses in vehicles constructed after 1992 are usually made from synthetic materials and do not suffer from biodiesel use. Please also note that Seat, Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda have approved all their cars manufactured between 1996 and 2004 to run on 100% biodiesel. Some French manufacturer warranty new vehicles for 30% biodiesel. TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE It is beneficial for anyone that is interested in purchasing biodiesel to become members of Llangattock Biodiesel Club as we can negotiate an even better price in the future from our current supplier, Sundance Renewables. If we increase our buying power by acting together rather than individuals we can achieve even lower prices potentially. HOW DOES BIODIESEL PERFORM IN COLD WEATHER? Llangattock Biodiesel Club sources biodiesel that has already got a winter additive added to it. This prevents the fuel from gelling that may cause blockages in the fuel system in colder weather conditions. HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER TO START PURCHASING BIODIESEL? Simple. You need to obtain and fill in a membership application form, which is available by contacting Stephen or Michael below. Membership is free. As soon as this has been completed and returned, you will receive a membership number and you’re ready to start filling up with biodiesel! AVAILABILITY 25ltr containers are available to collect (with a £3.00 refundable deposit on each container) and 1000ltr Industrial Bulk Carrier (IBC) containers (with a £50.00 refundable deposit on each IBC) are available for those club members who are heavy fuel users. An IBC container will be delivered directly to your home/business by Llangattock Biodiesel Club’s supplier Sundance Renewables. Llangattock Biodiesel Club vision and goal is to have a bunded tank in Llangattock in the future. This will allow members of Llangattock Biodiesel Club to fill up their fuel tanks at a pump located in our community. To achieve this goal we need as many members as is possible in order to justify this type of facility in our community. So spread the word to your neighbours and friends to become members of Llangattock Biodiesel Club. IMPORTANT LLANGATTOCK BIODIESEL CLUB OFFERS NO WARRANTY. BIODIESEL AND BLENDED BIODIESEL MAY NOT BE SUITABLE FOR ALL VEHICLES. CONSULT YOUR VEHICLE MANUFACTURER FOR ADVICE QUOTING THE VIN NUMBER AND/OR ENGINE NUMBER. USE OF BIODIESEL IS ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK. |
