LLANGATTOCK COMMUNITY WOODLAND GROUP PDF Print E-mail

Had a great meeting with a group in Builth Wells and found out lots about support for small woodlands in Wales.  Coed Cymru Regeneration Officer Mike Richards thinks we have a great link to the community.  He knows lots about woodlands but needs to get closer to the communities in Wales, we will try to help him here in Llangattock.  Ian Sheffner has been working in woodlands for many years and has built up an expertise in managment of small woodlands.  His website is now a link to LGV and please go and look at it. www.liws.co.uk - Low Impact Woodland Services

We are going to investigate the potential for a 'SMALL MACHINERY RING'.

The Lime Kilns

lime kilns 002The Lime Kilns in Llangattock are a Grade 11 Listed Building with specific importance in relation to the industrial revolution in South Wales.  They are a fine example of the link between the industrial purposes of the canal when originally constructed in the early 19th Century.

Our aim is to obtain planning permission to provide secure storage for wood fuel for Llangattock which will be well seasoned and ready to burn in wood fuel burners.

This will enable us to support a renewable energy resource, bring back in to use a fine building and develop a showcase for the Llangattock British Gas Green Streets Project.

TRAINING DAY REPORT - SUNDAY 21 FEB

bw-1

L-R: Kevin Phillips (British Waterways) and his dog Trixie and Gareth Ellis (Brecon Beacons National Park) with woodland volunteers Mike Houlton (Cwmdu Sustainable Energy Group), Dianne Spencer, Geoff Williams, Jackie Charlton, Simon Walter and Chris Evans (Cwmdu).

Our partnership with British Waterways got under way in earnest last weekend with a full workday in the canalside woods. We had a fantastic day: Kevin Phillips of British Waterways came down to welcome us to our new site, Gareth spent the day chainsawing the timber we'll leave down as deadwood, while the rest of us got on with rhododendron clearance - a task which involved a bonfire and our very first woodland-made cuppa and cooked lunch (baked spuds and bangers).

We made big inroads into the rhododendron - v satisfying, and welcomed a new member, too - Geoff Williams of Llangattock.

This Sunday (28 Feb) we'll be back at Canalside, clearing the cut rhododendron and logging up ready for extraction later. Hopefully we'll be joined by some of the members of Abergavenny Climate Action in the afternoon, if not all day.

Finally - a reminder about the Marcher Apple Network Orchard Day over at Cwmdu on  Saturday 27 Feb. They'd like our help planting fruit trees (they've got 30 to plant) and clearing rubbish from the copse area. They'll feed us as well - soup and a sandwich. TRAINING DAY REPORT – 6 FEB

Great day at Dan-y-Graig on Saturday 6 Feb – and at last some warmer weather.

Our insurance covers children too so we invited a couple along on Saturday to see how it would work.  With parents supervision it was a great day out for the kids and they were exhausted by the end of it.

Children between 4yrs and 9yrs have to be supervised one-to-one by parents so it is a great family activity.  Over 9yrs we can arrange some cover but it is great to see whole families.
