School & Community Hall PDF Print E-mail

Thanks to the British Gas Green Streets project, this year the School and Community Hall will receive some £30,000 of British Gas money, with £10,000 of match funding. The money will be used for insulation improvements to make the buildings more comfortable and cheaper to run, and to install a solar PV system to generate electricity.

Based on the new Feed-in Tariffs announced by the Government earlier this year, the PV system could generate up to £2,000 worth of extra income a year for the school - good news for the school and the pupils.

Where we are at

INSULATION

  • The British Gas insulation team surveyed both buildings on 24 March 2010. We're still waiting for their official report, but the survey revealed that both buildings have insufficient loft insulation, and while the community hall does at least have cavity wall insulation, the school has none (barring the new extension). So better insulation will go a long way towards making these buildings more energy efficient.
  • The insulation survey also identified that the buildings' single-glazed windows are draughty and responsible for a huge waste of energy, so we're in talks with Powys County Council to see whether we can get these replaced through the Local Education Authority.

SOLAR PV

  • The buildings have been surveyed, with a recommendation for a 4.32kWp system to be installed on the school's south-facing roof.

Other news

Congratulations to Year 5 pupil Emily Eynon. 10-year-old Emily beat off stiff competition from her Year 5 and 6 classmates to win a design competition to create a logo for Llangattock Green Valleys.

Her design, which is now featured on our Home page, (and which grabbed her a front page spot in  the Brecon & Radnor Express) was selected from 25 entries by judges Mary Taylor, Chair of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Julie Chappell, Editor of the Brecon & Radnor Express, and Simon Walter, the graphic designer who briefed the children for the project.

The logo will feature on LGV's website and other communications, such as banners, T-shirts, bumper stickers and so on.

Three other entrants were highly commended by the judges: Georgia Grady, Year 6, and Dafydd Treasure and Eleanor Grainger, both Year 5. Their  original designs are currently shown on the Home page.

Well done to all the entrants! And a big thanks to their teacher, Jo Jones, for supervising the competition.
