Community Woodlands

Llangattoclcwgk Community Woodlands

In 2008 the village of Llangattock came together to set up a number of green organisations, including LACAS – an allotment society, Llangattock Litter Pickers, and Llangattock Community Woodlands – a woodland society that generates 100 cubic metres of firewood a year. In 2009 the community won the British Gas Green Street competition. The prize money combined with Welsh Government funding provided the seed capital for the hydro-electric generation project.

Through the British Gas Green Streets competition, LGV provided funding towards a firewood processor, chainsaw, tools and personal safety equipment for the Llangattock Community Woodland Group (now Llangattock Community Woodlands).

LCW has been operating as a charity since October 2013.  It has proved a worthwhile opportunity to showcase small community woodland organisations and develop a more sustainable future for our community group.

Strategic planning and a need to assess long term sustainability is necessary for all community led groups now.  Llangattock Community Woodlands will continue to operate and work with well thought out aims and the desire to make a difference to the environment along the way.

Becoming a charity reinforces public benefit aims and provides funders and supporters with confidence that woodland management does deliver. The Trustees meet regularly every three months and the AGM is held in May each year.

Funding is an ongoing issue but support through grants and raising money from wood sales Llangattock Community Woodlands is keen to ensure future financial and environmental sustainability through volunteer activity.  Our strategy is designed to increase sales of wood fuel and provide other products from the woodland management.

LCW is keen to increase the number of volunteers who help and there are different project areas to suit different volunteer needs, abilities and expectations.  Please do get in touch if you are interested in woodland management, environmental projects, bee keeping or green wood craft.  See more details here.

In January 2016 a bee group was established to help expand our Trees and Bees Project. This was achieved with the help of Bob Needs, a very experienced bee keeper who joined LCW as a volunteer a few years ago. You can find out more about the bee group and LCW’s other activities through LCW’s monthly contributions to the LGV Newsletter.

In January 2019, the BBC Wildlife Magazine featured this article about the woodland group.
